ABOUT THE PAINTING:

This piece, Rain at Sea, is the key piece of a body of work forming a solo show celebrating my studio opening in Lipari Island, Sicily. This painting features imagery evocative of the weather and the Mediterranean, suggesting growth, transition, and movement. Created with a multitude of mediums, from acrylics to calligraphy inks, oil paint and sticks, this piece exponentially expands my investigation of the relationship between gesture and painting.

The brushstrokes evoke associations with nature shifting subtly between representation and abstraction. This is an extremely physical composition, reflecting the dynamic range of motion and intensity of focus brought to its making. At the same time, this is a contemplative and suggestive composition translating my observations and memories of natural phenomena, such as changes in light, the rushing of the rain on the ocean and movement of the wind, into a language of abstraction that is at once lively and dynamic; deeply personal, yet open to interpretation.

“There is always the thought of colour: I remember a situation, a day, a landscape, and it brings me to an image of a colour I want to describe. Then I start with that colour.” -
