Amazonia: A Visual Journey of Brazilian Indigenous Culture and Conservation by Sebastiao Salgado

My favourite photographer Sebastiao Salgado has a mesmerizing exhibition of 200 photographs, "Amazonia," at the Fabrica del Vapore in Milan – 12 May – 19 Nov 2023.

There are 100 photographs of the people of the Amazon, along with video interviews of indigenous leaders. A especially amazing part is dedicated to 12 indigenous groups that Salgado has immortalised in his numerous trips, including a specially commissioned immersive soundtrack from Jean-Michel Jarre that brings to life the sounds of the rainforest.

Yet, "Amazonia" carries a deeper message within its frames. It stands as both an urgent plea for conservation and a reverent celebration of the invaluable cultural heritage interwoven with this delicate and essential ecosystem. What I love the most about his work though is that besides raising awareness about deforestation, Salgado has been working for decades as an active conservationist along with Lelia Salgado. His art is effectively a window to the work in progress on the ground: the couple has been actively working on the reforestation of a large area of the Amazon forest as part of their commitment with the Terra Institute. Get to know this amazing effort and the results here:

As an artist interested in the topic of sustainability, Salgado remains as a role model for all of us interested in producing art for change. His unwavering dedication to social and environmental sustainability through art serves as a shining example for artists like me, right here in Sicily, who are striving to use our creative endeavors to bring about positive change in our local and global communities. His exhibition is a profound call to action, resonating with anyone who believes in the transformative power of art to champion environmental and cultural preservation.
